Launches Upset Races
Eton Excelsior crews in two regatta incidents
AN UNLUCKY DAY
The Eton Excelsior Rowing Club had a busy day on Saturday with entries in three events at two regattas. In all three events, the Excelsior crews reached the final and two of them were marked by unusual incidents, which cost Eton victory.
Obstruction on Course
At Maidenhead, in the final of the junior fours, a launch obstructed the crews just as they were settling down to race, and the event had to be restarted. This proved to the Excelsior’s disadvantage, and they were beaten, after a good race, by Henley Rowing Club, who passed the post one and a half lengths ahead. In the maiden fours final at the same regatta, the Excelsior were defeated by two lengths by Maidenhead County Boys’ School.
Defeat by Two Feet
At Kingston regatta the junior senior eight had high hopes of victory. Starting three-quarters of a length down on the staggered stake-boats in their final against the Molesey B.C., the Excelsior were three-quarters of a length ahead after two minutes, and their opponents could make little impression. However, fifty yards from the winning post, when still leading by half a length, Eton came to grief. The wash of a passing launch threw them off their balance and almost brought the boat to a standstill. A desperate attempt was made at recovery, but Molesey were declared the winners by two feet.
