E.E.R.C. REGAIN THE CAPTAIN’S CUP
Eton Excelsior Rowing Club defeated Mortlake Rowing Club in all three of the events rowed on the Datchet reach on Saturday, when this inter-club competition was revived after a lapse of five years with races for eights, senior fours and junior fours.
The eights provided the excitement of the afternoon. Although led at the start by half a length, the Eton crew was not dismayed, and with a well-timed spurt rowed past its opponents to win by three-quarters of a length. The Club Captain, V. H. Hobbs, at stroke, gave judgment and experience to a crew for the most part new to Thames rowing.
In the race for senior fours, the home crew was never in danger of defeat. Stroked by R. Derry, they led from the start to win comfortably by about five lengths. V. A. Wood at bow steered an expert course.
The victory of the junior fours was perhaps the most pleasing result of the afternoon. After very little coaching, this crew, all beginners, rowed a race distinguished for its spirit and determination if not for its elegance. At stroke for about the third time of his life, T. Hardwick kept his crew hard at it; and they rowed over to win by about four lengths. The crews:—
