EXCELSIOR VICTORIES

Wins at Maidenhead and Henley

The successes of Eton Excelsior Rowing Club at two regattas during the Bank Holiday week-end have put the Club on the map again, and it is hoped that as the result of this fine performance the Club will be able to compete at Henley Royal Regatta in 1947.

The successes at Maidenhead Regatta on Saturday were the Junior-Senior Eight, who beat Thames R.C. by two and a half lengths, and the Junior-Senior Four, who were awarded their race against Thames R.C. on a foul.

Junior-Senior Eight: Bow—A. Gregory, J. Lawson, G. D. Dyson, E. M. Ross, J. J. Sowerby, L. Barratt, V. A. C. Wood; stroke—B. J. Cork; Cox—L. T. Jones.

Junior-Senior Four: Bow—V. A. C. Wood, B. J. Cork, J. J. Sowerby; stroke—L. Barratt.

At Henley Regatta on Monday, another fine feature was the Maiden Four, which consisted of all new members this season, the stroke of the crew (F/Sgt. G. Fraser, R.A.F.) travelled fifty miles three times week to row, which shows the fine spirit and keenness of the members.

In the final of this race E.E.R.C. beat Henley R.C. by two and a half lengths.

The Junior-Senior Four had very bad luck—their final against Henley R.C., after being a length down, they drew level at the enclosure and just before the winning post they caught a “crab” which just lost them the race.

Junior-Senior Eight: Bow—A. Gregory, J. Lawson, G. D. Dyson, E. M. Ross, J. J. Sowerby, L. Barratt, V. A. C. Wood; Stroke—B. J. Cork; Cox—L. T. Jones.

Junior-Senior Four: Bow—J. J. Sowerby, B. J. Cork, V. A. C. Wood; Stroke—L. Barratt.

Maiden Four: Bow—T. H. Steel; M. W. March, A. J. Steel; Stroke—G. M. Fraser; Cox—W. Steel.

At the end of this regatta, the Club Captain (V. H. Hobbs) was successful in stroking the winning crew of the scratch fours.
