Dual Success at Reading Regatta
One of the most exciting races witnessed last Saturday at Reading Regatta was the final of the Maiden Fours for the “Sandeman” Challenge Cup. The Eton Excelsior crew, having beaten Reading University “А” Crew in the 1st heat by three lengths, and Marlow Rowing Club in the 2nd heat by two lengths, won the final against Tiffin School B.C. by 2 feet, after being three quarters of a length down at the half-way mark; each stroke from there brought them a few inches “up”. Half a length from the winning post, the crews were level. The finish was so close neither crew knew the result until the Judge’s announcement. The crew was as follows:- A. U. Shiach (str.), J. F. B. Keith (3), G. E. Jones (2), R. E. Barnes (bow), L. H. Dismore (cox). A. U. Shiach stroked really well, and the whole crew deserved the congratulations they received. Their success was largely due to the coaching of Mr. L. W. S. Howard in the latter part of their training, both from the Brocas and the towpath at Reading.
The Junior Four – K. L. Huy (stroke), F. B. Frampton (3), F. A. Gurney (2), E. T. Watson (bow), H. J. Nichols (cox) – rowed two very fine races, beating Reading University Boat Club in the 1st Heat by 1½ lengths, and Courtenay Lodge Boat Club (who have been the holders for three years) by three-quarters of a length in the final, after leading all the way. Time, 5min. 31secs. This crew will represent the Club at Marlow Regatta tomorrow (Saturday).
