Windsor v. Eton Race

The annual eight-oar race for the cup given by the late Sir G. H. Peters, J.P., between Windsor and Eton members of the Eton Excelsior Rowing Club was rowed on Wednesday evening over the usual course, from Clewer Point to Eton College Rafts. The result was a victory for Windsor by 1½ lengths.

Despite the rain, quite a number of old members and rowing enthusiasts witnessed the race. The Mayor of Windsor, Mr. A. H. Dyson, Mr. E. C. Hetherington and a number of others followed in the launch “Etona” (kindly lent for the occasion).

The race was started by Mr. T. Boswell, and Mr. J. Derry (the Club’s coach) acted as judge.

The Windsor crew got away well and were up a length at the “White Gate,” then Eton made a wonderful recovery and reduced the lead to ½ a length. At the G.W.R. Bridge, Windsor, taking advantage of the bend, again went ahead; along the Brocas Eton picked up considerably, but Windsor then had the race well in hand and went on to win by 1½ lengths.

This race has been won twelve times by Windsor, six times by Eton with one year a dead heat.

The Eton Excelsior Rowing Club’s annual regatta will be held tomorrow (Saturday), first race at 2 p.m.. The entries are well up to average, and there are several events which can be entered for on the day. A race for ladies is being arranged, should there be enough entrants forthcoming. The Mayoress of Windsor has kindly consented to present the prizes.

After the regatta, a flannel dance has been arranged at the Castle Hotel.
