Reading Amateur Regatta
FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT
At Reading Amateur Regatta on Saturday, there was a record entry of 79 crews and scullers and a huge programme of 67 races. It was in consequence of this that the umpires tried to maintain the programme to its scheduled time, and when five crews in the Junior Eights arrived at the post after the time their races should have started, the umpires disqualified them. Four of them, Kingston and Kensington, and Twickenham and Quintin, held unofficial races, Kingston and Twickenham proving successful.
The clubs protested against the decision of the umpires, although Law 17 states:—
The jurisdiction of the umpire extends over a race and all matters connected with it . . . and his decision in all cases shall be final and without appeal.
A meeting of the umpires was held and as a result Kingston and Twickenham were allowed to start in the next round, but they were both beaten. The Junior Eights race and also the Harrison-Jones Trophy, which is awarded to the crew making the fastest time of the day in the Junior Eights, were both won by Pembroke College, Cambridge, but some surprise was occasioned by the entry of a crew of their standing in the Junior Eights, especially as they will be competing in either the Ladies’ Plate or Thames Cup at Henley. They were far and away the best crew in the event and won all of their races with ease.
QUINTIN’S SUCCESS
The Grand Challenge Cup for Thames Cup Eights was won by Quintin Boat Club. They were making their first appearance of the season in this class and are a very useful crew. The way in which they brought their boat in at the finish shows that the crew are not lacking in reserve power, for Imperial College led them for three-quarters of the course in the final. Neither Thames nor London were represented by their Henley Thames Cup crews. Eton Excelsior received some consolation for their disqualification in the Junior Eights by winning the Sandeman Cup for Junior-Senior Eights. The home club, Reading, added another victory to their success in the Senior Fours at Walton last week by winning their own event for this class, and they should do well in the Wyfold Cup at Henley.
Thames gained their only victory of the day in the Junior-Senior Fours, while the victory of Henley in the Junior Fours should be welcome encouragement to the struggling club. The Avon Rowing Club also received encouragement for their trip from Bath by winning the Maiden Fours. At Richmond Regatta, Kingston Grammar School won the Public Schools Cup by beating their local rivals, Tiffin School, but on Saturday Tiffin’s had their revenge.
E. W. Wingate, of Vesta, who won the Senior Sculls at Walton, was rather surprisingly beaten on Saturday in his heat by B. S. Fidler, a local sculler, and D. Guye, whom Wingate beat at Walton, very easily beat Fidler in the final. A probable Diamond’s entrant in R. Hope, of New College, Oxford, won the Junior-Senior Sculls. A good success was that of S. W. Latham in the Junior Sculls. As Latham was also in his club’s Senior Four he had to take part in five races during the day.
