ROWING

THE DEVEREUX FOURS.

The Eton Excelsior R.C. held their annual four-oar race for the Devereux Cup (presented by the late Mr. E. C. Devereux) on Monday.  The course was from a point just above the Mill Stream to Eton College Boat- house “Rails”.  A most exciting race was witnessed, neither crew being clear at any time.  The Berks crew had rather the better start, being up at the Mill Stream by a quarter of a length.

From there the positions changed very little until the Railway Bridge was reached.  There the Berks crew, having the advantage of the bend, drew away and were leading by three-quarters of a length at the Swimming Club.  The Bucks crew then spurted and reduced the lead to half a length.  Going down the Brocas it looked as though Bucks would down their opponents, but the stroke of the Berks crew made a final effort at the Ferry and went ahead to win by a quarter of a length in 4 min. 52 sec.

The crews were as follows:

Berks:  L. P. Keys, D. R. G. Goodchild, R. S. McDonogh, H. C. Gough (str.).

Bucks:  R. W. Bashford, H. C. Davies, E. Manson, P. Watson (str.).
