Eton Excelsior Regatta

Windsor beat Eton

By “TIDESMAN”

THE annual Regatta of the Eton Excelsior Rowing Club was held at Windsor on Saturday, August 25th, in glorious sunshine. This Regatta is considered the most popular of the small “rag” Regattas and every year is well attended.

Racing in the Skiff events took place over a short course and the Fours were contested over a course of just over half a mile.

Entries this year were small, but the standard was high.

Marlow R.C. won the Ruthven Cup for Junior Fours, which is the principal event at the Regatta, beating Eton Excelsior in the final, the other entries being Henley and Albion. Henley made up for their defeat by winning the Maiden Fours, this time from Marlow, having previously beaten Eton Excelsior in the heat.

The Gentlemen’s Double Sculls was retained by L. D. Habbitts and S. W. Latham, of Reading, who beat in the final an Anglian-Eton Excelsior combination consisting of N. Miroy and F. W. Buck. Latham and his sister also retained the Mixed Doubles title, winning easily.

However, they were beaten in the Mixed Doubles Dinghy race by the winners of two years ago, namely, C. D. Dyson and Mrs. Dyson.

In the annual race for the Peters Cup, Windsor defeated Eton by a length and a half, and thus regained the trophy which they lost last year.

Entries were numerous for the Scratch Fours event, 9 crews being made up. V. H. Hobbs again stroked the winning crew, being well backed up by Latham at 3. It must be mentioned that he was lucky to draw for a coxen, G. H. Collins, of Marlow, who weighed barely 6 stone, while one four was steered by a 12 stone man, the other four men in the boat all weighing over 12 stone.

Among the Clubs represented were Albion, Anglian, Auriol, Birmingham, Eton Excelsior, Henley, Kensington, London, Maidenhead, Marlow, Reading, Staines and Vesta.
