GLORIOUS WEATHER FOR SUCCESSFUL EVENT.
PRIZES PRESENTED BY MAYORESS OF WINDSOR
A large number of people took advantage of the glorious weather on Saturday to watch the Eton Excelsior Rowing Club’s annual regatta either from the Brocas or the enclosure, and a very good afternoon’s sport was witnessed.
Racing commenced at 2 p.m., with the first heat of the Open Maiden Four-Oar race, in which Eton Excelsior beat Reading, and went on to beat Maidenhead in the final.
The Open Mixed Double Sculling, a race inaugurated this season, was quite popular, five crews entering, but it is hoped that next year more entries than this will be received.
The race for the handicap sculls, limited to club members, was very interesting. There were seven entries, and the course was from the enclosure, upstream, to the entrance to the Mill Stream, where each boat turned round a ryepeck, and back to the enclosure. The nett time taken by the winner, A. U. Shiach, was 9 min. 30 secs., and he won by two lengths, and D. S. Harrison, who was second, beat the third man by \(\frac{1}{2}\) length.
A “Shipwreck”
There were six crews entered for the scratch dongolas, always an amusing event. One crew in the first heat did not get away well, but turned the buoy in great style, and were then leading, but, the crew being rather a heavy one and watermanship not too good, they shipped a lot of water and gradually sank before reaching the winning post.
The scratch four attracted nine crews, and some of the finishes were very close. The judges could not separate the boats in the fifth heat, both crews crossing the line dead level: after a re-row from half-way the Bucks crew won by three feet.
The officials are to be congratulated on the way the races were kept up to time.
The Prizegiving
At the conclusion of the racing, the Mayoress of Windsor (Mrs. R. Rawkins), supported by the Mayor, presented the prizes and Barbara Barrett, the daughter of one of the members, presented the Mayoress with a bouquet, composed of flowers in the Club’s colours.
The Captain, Mr. V. H. Hobbs, thanked the officials for their very kind help, and Mr. Claret (the manager of Eton College Boathouse), and all his men for their help and co-operation, without which the Regatta would be impossible. The lady helpers he paid special tribute to for giving up the afternoon, and in some cases the whole day, to run the teas. This was the first year the Club had ventured to provide teas, and owing to the kindness of members’ parents and friends in sending cakes, etc., the result was entirely successful and should help the finances of the Regatta considerably.
He thought the way in which the members of the visiting clubs entered into the scratch events was very sporting and concluded by thanking the hon. secretary for his untiring efforts to make the Regatta the success it had been.
Alderman Mitchell, J.P., the President, thanked the Mayoress most heartily on behalf of the Club, for coming and presenting the prizes, and the Mayor for supporting her.
The Mayor, in replying for the Mayoress, thanked Alderman Mitchell for his kind words, and those present for the way the Mayoress had been received. He wondered if anyone was present who remembered the first E.E.R.C. Regatta, which was inaugurated in 1851. The Club had a wonderful record, and he was very glad to see it was still flourishing (hear, hear and applause).
He hoped the Club would soon be able to move their quarters to the island just above, and if anyone had the odd £900 required, he was sure the members would be most pleased to receive it (laughter).
