ETON EXCELSIOR R.C. REGATTA
A Lovely Day and Keen Racing
Saturday was an ideal day for rowing men, and the members of the Eton Excelsior Rowing Club and their friends revelled in the sunshine at the annual regatta held over the Windsor Reach. Once more, by the kindness of the Eton College Boat Club their rafts and premises were used as an enclosure and a fine programme was carried out. The organisers are to be congratulated on the fact that the events were dealt with so smartly that by 7.20 p.m. the last race had been rowed.
Up-river clubs were well represented and sport throughout was of the best. The Open Maiden Four-Oar Race for the Challenge Cup presented by the late Mr. A. Jacobs, was won by Eton Excelsior R.C., who are to be complimented on a capital performance. They first accounted for Reading R.C. by a length and went on to beat Maidenhead R.C. by 24 lengths in the final. In the Junior Fours for the Ruthven Cup, Maidenhead R.C. easily accounted for the Albion R.C. in the first heat and again rowing well, pulled off the final in their contest against Marlow R.C. with a length to spare. Last year H. J. W. Nicholls won the junior sculls. This year he went one better and enhanced his reputation by capturing the Senior Sculls from L. Barrett, who secured the honour in 1932. Both in his heat and in the final Nicholls won comfortably and received a warm ovation. The Junior Sculls went to A. U. Shiach, and L. H. Dismore won the Coxswain’s Sculls in which event he was second a year ago, to R. C. P. Hunt. Last year it was suggested that there should be an open mixed double sculling race. This year it became an accomplished fact and the innovation well justified itself, adding to the general interest of the proceedings. The winners were Miss M. Latham, S. W. Latham and Miss S. Latham. There was keen rivalry in the Club Four-oar Race, in which the successful crew was A. E. Sharratt, C. D. Dyson, F. W. Buck and V. A. C. Wood. The Handicap Sculls for the Wise Challenge Cup fell to A. U. Shiach, with D. S. Harrison second, and V. A. C. Wood third.
The other competitions were all of a high standard of merit, but the spectators were, perhaps, roused to the highest pitch of excitement by the splendid races in the Scratch Fours which produced some remarkable finishes. To begin with, an entry of nine crews was something to be proud of, but added to this there was the spectacle of exceedingly close finishes, with a dead-heat thrown in to add to the fun. The dead-heat occurred in the fifth heat and all the judges agreed that it was impossible to separate the crews. The heat was re-rowed over a shortened course and even then the winners only reached the winning post with a quarter-of-a-length to the good. The final between crews stroked by Hobbs and Powell, both Eton Excelsior men, was particularly good. Amongst the spectators were the Mayor and Mayoress of Windsor (Alderman and Mrs. R. G. Rawkins) and the President of the Club (Alderman G. Mitchell).
The Prize Distribution
The prize distribution took place in the presence of a large number of people. Mr. V. Н. HOBBS, captain of the Club, thanked the Eton College authorities for the use of their rafts and boathouses, and paid a tribute to the work of Mr. A. Claret, the manager, and the staff for the manner in which they had helped towards making the regatta the success it had proved to be. He expressed gratitude to numerous ladies and gentlemen who had worked so well towards a happy result, and specially thanked the ladies for the new effort in providing them with teas and refreshments. The undertaking had involved a considerable amount of work. He voiced the appreciation of the Club for the support they had received from visitors, and last but not least, complimented Mr. C. D. Dyson, the Hon. Secretary, one of the hardest workers of them all (hear, hear).
The MAYORESS, who was presented with a bouquet, by Miss Barbara Barratt, handed the awards to the successful competitors.
The PRESIDENT tendered to the Mayoress the sincerest thanks for her kindness in coming to present the prizes. They also appreciated highly the support of the Mayor (applause).
Three cheers were accorded the Mayoress, followed by another for the Mayor. The MAYOR, speaking on behalf of the Mayoress and himself, thanked all for their cordial welcome. “I do not know,” he said, “if any of you were here in 1851. I think it was then that this Club was established, and it has been going on successfully ever since. We are delighted to see it flourishing and I hope the time is not far distant when the Club will have their boathouse on the island a little above this point. They have been anxiously endeavouring to get the money for it, and if anyone has £9,000 in their pocket, now’s the time to hand it over! (laughter). The Hon. Treasurer is on the spot.” Finally, His Worship congratulated the Club on the weather and upon a very successful regatta. He complimented the prize-winners and sympathised with those who had not won (hear, hear and applause).

Following the regatta, a successful dance was held at the Castle Hotel, when there was an attendance of 180. Capital music was supplied and the M.C.’s were Messrs. V. H. Hobbs and A. Bellringer. Dancing was in progress from 8 p.m. to 11.45 p.m.
