Eton Excelsior Regatta is Revived After Seven Years

Large entries mark the resumption of well-known river event: Some promising young oarsmen show their paces.

Keen racing in unpleasant conditions

“ONE of the best organised regattas of the season” was the comment of a visitor to the Eton Excelsior Regatta which was revived over the Windsor Reach on Saturday. This was the 89th regatta arranged by the club, and all the features of pre-war days were included in the programme, together with several innovations. There was a large entry and some keen racing was watched by big crowds in the enclosures on the Eton College rafts and from the Windsor Promenade.

The Open Junior Fours, the Open Maiden Fours and the Scratch Fours all attracted good support from Thames clubs and this eventually ruined the organizers’ efforts to keep their time schedule. The announcement of the racing details was very efficiently managed and greatly added to the convenience and enjoyment of the spectators.

The weather was anything but ideal for river sport, but this did not mar the day and the racing besides being keen and of a good standard, showed that there are some very promising young oarsmen along the upper reaches.

At the conclusion of the day’s events the prizes were presented by Mrs. Mott-Radclyffe, wife of the M.P. for the Windsor Division. Later the Club held their usual regatta dance at the Castle Hotel.
