Views of the Past — 2011

The 2011 Views of the Past articles offer a concentrated glimpse into Windsor’s changing townscape and the importance of preserving its history. Familiar local names and institutions feature prominently, from Butler & Bowden’s drapers and Windsorian Coaches to Vanished Windsor, while an article on A. Y. Nutt’s Christmas cards reveals Windsor through the work of one of the town’s most distinctive artists. Together, they capture both everyday Windsor and the ways in which its appearance and character have been recorded for later generations.

History in 2011 also reaches from the turbulence of Windsor during the Civil War to remembrance of those who served and died in conflict. The year concludes on an especially significant note with The Queen opening the Windsor and Royal Borough Museum, an institution whose long journey from early exhibitions and stored collections to a permanent home in the Guildhall reflected decades of work to safeguard the borough’s heritage.
