A salute to Windsor’s war effort generosity
■ SUPPORT: Advertisement for Warship Week. As with all these wartime funding weeks, money was raised by selling savings certificates during 1942. This raised almost £50,000 over the target from the residents of Windsor, and nationally just under a million pounds was raised through this campaign alone.
THIS week I have selected some interesting images associated with Windsor and the war.
During the early 1940s, the people of Windsor rallied together to raise money for three distinct projects.
These were to purchase a warship through ‘Warship Week’ (1941), a Spitfire through ‘Wings for Victory Week’ (1943) and, finally, assistance for the troops through ‘Salute the Soldier Week’ (1944).
On each occasion, the money raised exceeded the targets which had been set.
If you have any memories of these events, please get in touch on the email above – I would love to hear your stories.
■ TAKING THE SALUTE: HRH King George VI and the Royal Family, including Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret Rose, during Wings for Victory Week at Windsor Castle in May 1943. Also shown in the photograph is the Mayor of Windsor, Cllr Norman Butler. This successful campaign raised just under £40,000 through donations from the Windsor community.
‘BACK THE GREAT ATTACK’: The Salute the Soldier Week to [???] which was placed at the bottom of Castle Hill – June 1944.
