Three Collisions
Eton Excelsior R.C. gained two successes, their junior eight defeating Imperial College to win the “Sandhurst” challenge cup, while their junior senior four gained a bye into the final of the “Maiden Erleigh” challenge cup, in which they defeated Marlow R.C. on a foul, after an amazing race.
The crews collided three times, but the umpire allowed the race to finish, Marlow passing the post half a length ahead. Then the official announced that he had disqualified Marlow and awarded the race to Eton.
A rather extraordinary procedure this, more particularly as there was no protest from the Eton crew afterwards.
One would have thought that the umpire would have stopped the race immediately he considered Marlow had committed an offence.
