Successes at Reading
Three Challenge Trophies at the First Regatta
The Eton Excelsior R.C. were represented at the Reading Amateur Regatta on Saturday by a Junior Eight and a Junior-Senior Four, and both crews were successful.
The Junior-Senior Four beat Marlow R.C. The trophy for this race was won by the Club in 1910 and 1923. The crews were: S. Blane, H. G. Hetherington, I. F. Blane, C. R. Cherry, V. J. Pottow, G. Newton, W. Dowsett, J. W. Croft respectively.
The Junior Eight disposed of Reading B.C. in their first heat, beating them by one length in the time of 4.45 min.
In the semifinal the Excelsior crew met Oriel College, Oxford, who had recently made three bumps in the Oxford Eights. Oriel led Eton by a length and a quarter in the first 1½ min., but rowing well together the Excelsior crew rowed Oriel down to win by three-quarters of a length in the fastest time for Junior Eights of 4.43 min., thus winning the Challenge Trophy for the fastest time.
In the final, Eton Excelsior met Imperial College B.C. and led from the start, at the beginning of the enclosure they were a length up, then in a final burst drew away to win by 2½ lengths, in 4.45 min.
Thus Eton Excelsior Rowing Club have had a very satisfactory start to the season, having gained three Challenge Trophies at the first regatta.
