The Race for the “Peters” Cup
Eton Defeat Windsor
The Eton Excelsior Rowing Club held their annual eight-oar race for the “Peters” Cup on Wednesday, and after one of the best races seen for this trophy, the victory went to the Eton eight. The challenge cup was presented by the late Sir G. H. Peters for the race over the course from Clewer Point to Eton College boathouse. The teams were: Windsor: A. Sharratt (bow), J. G. White, D. S. Harrison, V. H. Hobbs, F. W. Buck, J. B. Powell, V. A. Wood, M. Wayman (stroke), C. D. Dyson (cox). Eton: E. H. Stubbs (bow), J. Skinner, C. Tuckey, A. G. Blake, J. M. Waller, D. A Bond, N. J. Nicholls, R. J. Cork (stroke), B. J. Cork (cox).
The Mayor (Councillor G. E. Short), Mr. A. H. Dyson and Mr. T. Boswell (the starter) were among those in the launch Etona, which followed the race.
An excellent start was made by both crews and shortly before the Eton Country Club, Windsor were slightly in the lead. With Eton about a quarter of a length behind, there was little change in their positions until they reached the railway bridge, where a slight mishap befell the Berks crew. After that Eton gradually drew ahead to win by half a length.
After the race, a supper was given by Mr. A. H. Dyson, the oldest member of the Club, and a very enjoyable gathering of members was held. Mr. Dyson was supported by the Mayor (Councillor G. E. Short), Mr. T. Boswell, Mr. R. Radnor, Mr. W. Blane, Mr. L. Blane, Mr. B. N. Betteridge and Mr. F. Wilkinson.
Proposing the health of the Excelsior Rowing Club and their President, Mr. DYSON said he regretted Ald. Mitchell was unable to be present. It gave him great pleasure to have the members and old members of the Club with him, a few of whom he used to row with. The Mayor had kindly come to join them. He had always taken a great interest in the Club and its activities.
Mr. V. H. HOBBS, the Club captain, responded. He said Mr. Dyson was the oldest member of the Club. They were proud that at his age he should take such a great interest in it. If there were many more like him the Club would be the strongest on the Thames.
The CHAIRMAN proposed the health of the Mayor and referred to the older members and said they were pleased to see them present.
He mentioned Mr. Boswell, Mr. Baker, Mr. Billy Blane, Mr. Betteridge, Mr. Wilkinson, Mr. Luff, Mr. Leo Blane and Mr. Radnor. They were grateful for the interest taken in the Club by the Mayor and he would like also to mention the Mayoress whose work in the town was known to all.
Replying, the MAYOR congratulated the Club on their performance and said he was struck by the excellent steering. He had been associated with Mr. Dyson for many years although not in the rowing world. It was always a great pleasure to be associated with sportsmen.
After two older members of the Club, also the Secretary, Mr. C. D. Dyson, and Assistant Secretary, Mr. Powell, had been toasted, past captains were called upon to give their reminiscences. The evening concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne”.
