I WAS interested to learn that New Lodge on the Drift Road, near Winkfield, has been put up for sale at an asking price of £15million.
Although it is currently rented out to a number of companies and is used as a conference centre the sales particulars suggest it could be converted back into a single residence as it was intended when built.
New Lodge or ‘Hound’s Lodge’ was originally built as a hunting lodge during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and is shown on John Norden’s map of the Royal Forest of Windsor of 1607.
The present house dates from 1857 and was designed by the architect Thomas Talbot Bury who was a student of the architect AW Pugin and designed some 74 Gothic churches across the country.
Talbot Bury was commissioned by the Belgian Ambassador Sylvan van de Weyer.
The land was given to him by Queen Victoria as a wedding present and when the house was built was a frequent visitor with her children.
In 1911, due to inclement weather, the Farnham Bi Plane carrying the first aerial mail service from Hendon to Windsor had to make an emergency landing at New Lodge.
During the earlier part of the First World War refugees were housed at the mansion.
In 1916 the estate was sold in 70 lots and in 1925 had become an exclusive private clinic known as the New Lodge Clinic.
One of the patients at the clinic was the composer Gustav Holst, who died of heart failure in 1934.
After the Second World War, New Lodge became a Barnardo’s children’s home and then later as the British Transport training centre and then as the headquarters for the Barbour Index.
In the 1970s, the house was used for the Hammer House Of Horror film ‘Asylum’ starring Peter Cushing, Britt Ekland and Robert Powell.
In 2004 the New Lodge Estate was purchased by Marchday, who have restored the mansion to its former Victorian glory together with 55 acres of land.
