For the Sake of the View

MR. C. A. GLADSTONE, of Eton College, told a funny story at last night’s dinner of the Eton Excelsior Rowing Club.  I heard of it today from a man who was there.

He told the company how he once took a foreigner – who had never seen rowing – to the rafts at Eton.

But, this is absurd!” said his guest.  “Why, they row backwards – they cannot even see the view.

So, Mr. Gladstone confessed, he solemnly told the visitor that rowing was actually invented at Eton, in prehistoric times, and that Etonians deliberately started rowing backwards for the sake of the magnificent view of Windsor Castle as they went upstream.
