Eton Win Annual Race for the “Peters” Cup.

Supper at the Old House Hotel.

The annual eight oar race between crews of the Eton Excelsior Rowing Club representing the towns of Windsor and Eton, is one of the oldest events of its kind on the Thames. On Wednesday evening the Cup presented to the Club in 1870 by Sir George Peters was again contested and Eton won after a very fine race by a length. Before the war Windsor had many more wins to their credit than their rivals on the Bucks shore but with the develop. ment of Slough, recruits from that district have come to the Club and Eton has frequently won the trophy. On Wednesday they started favourites and justified this distinction.

Windsor had a setback just before the race when it was known that Sharratt would not be able to take his place in the boat owing to illness; his place was taken by Budd. The officials followed the race from the launch “Etona”, kindly lent by the Eton College Boat Club. The officials were: Judge, Mr. Joe Tull: Starter, Mr. T. Boswell; Timekeeper, Mr. A. H. Dyson, and Mr. Baker got the crews into position prior to the start.

The start was, as usual, from Clewer Point, and Windsor held a slight advantage in the first fifty yards, but before the railway bridge had been reached Eton had drawn level and were almost half a length in front as the bridge was shot. Opposite the shelter on the promenade Eton had increased their advantage to a length and despite a gallant final spurt by Windsor, the men of Bucks held their lead until the finishing post was passed. The time was 4 min. 30 sec. The teams were:

Eton: C. Tuckey (how), J. Shore, R. S. McDonogh. H. G. Gougn, R. J. Cork, D. A. Bond, J. W. Nicholls, A. G. Blake (stroke), B. J. Cork (cox).

Windsor: W. R. Bashford (stroke), J. G. White, D. H. Budd, P. Watson, V. H. Hobbs, J. B. Powell, F. W. Buek, V. A. Wood (stroke), C. D, Dyson (cox).

CREWS ENTERTAINED BY THE PRESIDENT

After the race, Mr. A. H. Dyson, the president of the Club, entertained the crews, a number of old members of the Club and friends to supper at the Old House Hotel. Supporting the President were Messrs. E. Hetherington. T. Boswell, R. Radnor, H. Baker, W. Blane, J. H. Harding. B. Bettridge, J. Tall, V. Hobbs (captain), Cyril Dyson (hon, secretary). C. Howlett, F. Prescott and L. Forstor (representing the Windsor Swimming Club), etc. Before the company enjoyed an excellent meal, a minute’s silence out of respect for the memory of Mr. G. Mitchell, who was for a number of years president of the Club, was observed. Following the toast of The King, a number of speeches were made.

Mr. BLAKE, who stroked the Eton crew, thanking Windsor for a good race, congratulated the losers on a plucky struggle, and said that they made them go all the way.
