ETON EXCELSIOR ROWING CLUB’S REGATTA

A FINE DAY AND EXCELLENT RACING

LADY MARY CRICHTON PRESENTS THE PRIZES

SATURDAY ON THE THAMES

The Eton Excelsior Rowing Club held its annual regatta on Saturday afternoon when the entries of visitors were well up to the standard of previous years. There was a good attendance to see the regatta, which produced some excellent racing and a fair amount of amusement, while in the intervals between races, Messrs. Fenemore and Howlett and Co., supplied a variety of musical selections.

The prizes were presented in the evening by Lady Mary Crichton, who was supported by the Hon. Sir George Crichton, and Mr. C. Dyson, captain of the club. The president, Mr. George Mitchell (Mayor of Windsor), joined the party later in the afternoon, as was the Mayor of Windsor, Councillor F. I. Ellen, who is a vice president.

Mr. Dyson introduced Lady Mary, and expressed the club’s pleasure at her presence among them. She was presented with a beautiful bouquet by little Miss Pat Hobbs, who performed the ceremony very pretty.

Lady Mary then presented the prizes, after which Mr. Dyson once more thanked her very heartily on behalf of the club, and he also thanked the numerous helpers, judges, etc., and Mr. Claret for all the good work he had done in preparing the rafts for them. He concluded by asking for three cheers for Lady Mary, these being gladly accorded.

Lady Mary thanked them all very much, and said how pleased she was to come, and that she was very grateful to them for inviting her to present prizes.

In the evening a dance was held at the Castle Hotel. It was well attended and brought to a close a regatta favoured by the weather and in every way a great success.

The Eton Excelsior Rowing Club—one of the oldest on the Thames—were favoured with ideal weather on Saturday for their annual Regatta, which was held, as usual, over the Windsor Reach, by the kindness of the Eton College Boat Club, their rafts were used as an enclosure, and a large number of friends and visitors were present, including the Mayor and Mayoress of Windsor (Councillor F. L. and Mrs. Ellen), the President of the Club (Alderman G. Mitchell), and a number of prominent townsmen. Exquisite clubs were well represented, and some excellent finishes were witnessed, especially in the Scratch Four races. The Maiden Fours were won easily by Marlow R.C., who defeated the Eton Excelsior R.C. by three lengths; but the race for the Junior Fours was a very fine one, the Excelsior being defeated by Maidenhead R.C. by one length only after a hard struggle.

The entries for the Open Double Sculling Race with lady cox were well above average and some capital races were seen. The final was won by R. S. Green J. G. West, and Miss Lydall. We understand a Mixed Double Sculling Race will probably be included in next year’s programme. H. J. W. Nicholls had an easy victory in the Junior Sculls, but in the Senior event L. Barrett and C. V. Marment had a good tussle, the former winning by half-a-length only. C. J. R. Harvey gained a popular win in the Handicap Sculls.

The races for the Scratch Fours, with which the programme concluded, produced some splendid finishes, the crews being very level in most of the heats. The Dinghys, Canoes and Dongola Races were all well contested. The course for the Junior Fours and Maiden Fours was from the Mill Stream to the Enclosure; that for the Double Sculling and Scratch Fours from the Great Western Railway Bridge to the Enclosure; and that for the Dinghys, Canoes, and Dongolas from Windsor Bridge, round buoys, back to the Enclosure.

The Committee had done all possible for the comfort of visitors and the representatives of the various clubs competing, and Mr. A. Claret, the Manager of the Eton College B.C. rafts, and his assistants, also rendered material assistance. Mr. Franks’ speedy motor launch Ramsey 1st was used by the Umpires, and was well patronised by visitors during the afternoon. The following were the officials, who worked hard throughout the day:— Umpires: Messrs. G. H. Messes, F. Wilkinson (E.E.R.C.), O. H. Collins (Leander Club), and J. P. Brill (Maidenhead R.C.); Judges: Hon. Treasurer, G. Rowland and Rev. E. Dawson-Walker; Clerks of the Course—Messrs. B. N. Betteridge and A. T. Watson; Competitors’ Stewards—H. J. Andrews; Hon. Treasurer—Mr. V. A. C. Wood; Hon. Secretary—Mr. L. Barrett; Assistant Hon. Secretary—Mr. A. Bellringer; Scratch Events Secretaries—Mr. T. Luff and Mr. A. Bellringer; Committee—Messrs. H. A. Baker, G. W. Bayley, W. Bedford, F. W. Buck, D. A. Bond, J. B. Powell, A. E. Sharratt, and J. G. White.

Colonel the Hon. Sir George Crichton and Lady Mary Crichton arrived during the afternoon, and Lady Mary Crichton presented the prizes, prior to which she was presented with a beautiful bouquet of flowers by Miss Pat Hobbs, the little daughter of the Vice-Captain.

The Captain (Mr. C. D. Dyson) said they very much appreciated the visit of Sir George and Lady Mary Crichton, and on behalf of the Club he cordially thanked her Ladyship for so kindly presenting the prizes again. He also thanked the officials for their splendid work during the afternoon, and Mr. Claret for his help and co-operation. In conclusion, he called for three cheers for Sir George and Lady Mary Crichton, which were heartily given.
