Reading Win the Ruthven Cup

The Excelsior’s Ninth Trophy

Fine weather favoured the annual regatta on Saturday of the Eton Excelsior Rowing Club, which was founded in 1851, and an interesting programme was successfully carried out.  It was the last regatta of the season with open rowing events.  Owing to the recent heavy rains a very strong stream was running and difficulty was experienced in getting the crews on the stake boats.  The course for some of the Club events had to be shortened.  Members of the Eton and Windsor Humane Society were on duty near the Bridge in case of any mishap occurring, but fortunately there was not a single immersion during the whole afternoon.  The Reading Rowing Club, which has had a very successful season, won the Ruthven Cup for Junior Fours the principal event and the Eton Excelsior won its ninth trophy of the season, when it gained the Jacobs Cup for Maiden Fours.  The Staines Boat Club again won the Wakefield Memorial Cup for Double Sculls, J. H. Maslen and A. N. Morgan proving successful.  The Club races were all well contested, and the Scratch Fours proved a very popular event.

The courses for the various events were:  Junior Fours Clewer Point to Enclosure; Maiden Fours Mill Stream to Enclosure; Double Sculling and Scratch Fours – G.W. Railway Bridge to Enclosure: Dinghys, Canoes and Dongolas – From Windsor Bridge, round Buoys, back to Enclosure.

The Eton College authorities again kindly lent their premises as an enclosure, and there was a good attendance during the afternoon.  Among those present were: Mr. A. A. Somerville, M.P., Colonel the Hon. Sir George and Lady Crichton, Alderman G. Mitchell, Mr. A. H. Dyson, and a number of the other Vice-Presidents of the Club.  The Etona was used as the Umpire’s boat (by kind permission), and Mr. Alfred Claret (manager of the Eton College Brocas Boat Company) greatly helped the officials in the arrangements.

Mower-White (O.U.B.C.).  Judges: Mr. T. Boswell, Mr. J. W. Burnham, Mr. A. W. P. Harrison and Mr. O. Rowland.  Clerks of the Course: Mr. B. N. Betteridge, Mr. G. W. Corps, Mr. A. T. Watson and Mr. F. Mr. Kendall’s band was in attendance, and played selections of music during the afternoon.

Lady Mary Crichton presented the prizes, and was handed a beautiful bouquet by little Miss Janine Baker.

Mr. Cyril DYSON, in proposing a vote of thanks to Lady Mary Crichton, said they were very pleased to welcome her there, and also Sir George Crichton.  The Club thanked her Ladyship very much for presenting the prizes.  He would like to take this opportunity to thank all the officials for the great help they had given, and also Mr. Claret for his assistance.  He then called for three cheers for Lady Mary Crichton, which were heartily given.

Lady Mary CRICHTON said she thanked them very much indeed for their kind vote of thanks, and she desired to take that opportunity of congratulating the Club upon its enormous success this season.  The members had won no fewer than nine Cups at the various regattas, which was a notable feat.  Lady Mary added that they had been favoured with the fine weather for the regatta, upon which the Club was also to be congratulated.  She thanked them very much for inviting her, and she had had much pleasure in presenting the handsome prizes (applause).

Final – Berks: W. A. Brown and Barrett, 1; Bucks V. A. C. Wood and F. W. Buck, 2.  Won by four lengths.

CLUB FOUR-OAR RACE, for Robert Wm. King Memorial Cup.

JUNIOR SCULLS, for Challenge Cup, prize presented by Alderman Geo. Mitchell, J.P.

Final: Berks: C. V. Marment, 1; Bucks: A. E. Sharratt, 2.  Won easily.

PAIR-OAR GIG RACE, for the Richardson Gardner Challenge Cups.

Final: Berks: Eton Excelsior R.C., 1; Bucks. Henley Grammar School, 2.  The Excelsior went right away from their opponents and won very easily.

Successful Flannel Dance.

A very successful flannel dance was given at the Castle Hotel in the evening, there being a record attendance.  Mr. A. Bellringer, who worked untiringly, was the M.C., and is to be congratulated upon the result of his efforts.  Mr. Kendall’s band was in attendance.
