EERC at Richmond Regatta
Winners of the Heats but Lost in the Finals
Death of the Club’s Boatman
The Richmond and Twickenham Regatta was held last Saturday, under perfect weather conditions, and a very large number of entries were received. Preliminary heats were rowed off on the Friday evening.
The Eton Excelsior Rowing Club sent two crews, and considering the short time they have had to get together (owing to the floods), they put up a very good performance. Both crews won their heats but lost in the finals.
The Eight beat Leasbury in the first heat and lost to London in the second.
The Four beat Kingston in the heat and lost to Anglian in the final. This was an unfortunate race for Eton; they led for three parts of the course, then had to go round two steamers that came down the river, which undoubtedly lost them the race, as they were only half a length behind the winners.
The crews were as follows:-
Junior- Senior Eight: E. T. Watson, E. C. Smyth, J. B. V. Corps, J. Powell, D. Bond, V. H. Hobbs, J. Frampton, C. J. Harvey, R. C. P. Hunt (cox).
Junior-Senior Four: W. Brown, L. Barrett, W. Buck, V. Wood.
The club are sending a Junior Four to the Marlow Regatta tomorrow, as follows:- A. Sharratt (bow), J. Shackell (2), J. B. V. Corps (3), C. J. Harvey (str.), L. H. Dismore (cox).
Death of Club’s Boatman
We regret to record the death of Mr W. Sellers (in his 58th year), boatman to the club for over 26 years, which occurred on Monday. He was born at Eton, served in the Boar War, and was working for Mr E. Goddard, late captain of the club, when he came to the club as boatman. great interest in the E.E.R.C., and used to go down to the boathouse at all hours during His flood-times, to see the raft was safe. His familiar figure will be greatly missed by all the members.
A fund is being raised for his widow in recognition of his services for the club. Anyone wishing to subscribe should communicate with Mr A. Bellringer (assist. hon. secretary), “Fairview,” Maidenhead-road, Windsor.
