‘HONOURED’: Chris Brown, from Windsor, has been chosen as the Royal Borough town crier.
Town crier chosen
THE first town crier in the Royal Borough in more than 90 years has been chosen – and he has plenty to shout about.
Chris Brown, from Vale Road, Windsor, found out he had secured the ceremonial position on Monday morning after competing in a ‘cry-off‘ on the steps of the Windsor Royal Shopping Centre on Wednesday last week.
The 44-year-old said: “I was meant to find out the result on Friday, but I was away all day and then, over the weekend, I discovered how nervous I was to find out. I rang the council at a minute past nine on Monday to ask.
“As soon as I was given the good news, I told my wife Nicola, and we both sat there laughing as we were so shocked. I feel very honoured.“
Mr Brown, who owns website design company Brown Bear with his wife, added: “This is a role that somewhat suits my personality, but also, a kind of learned thing too. When I was a teenager, I was a tour guide at Wembley Stadium, which often involved shouting 150 yards for people to get off the pitch.“
He will not be paid for his new role but will be able to claim mileage expenses. The Royal Borough is paying for a special outfit which Mr Brow, who volunteers at the Royal Borough museum, is helping to design.
A date for his debut is yet to be announced, but Mr Brown, who has lived in Windsor since 1996, said: “I’ll be a little nervous about the first event, but I know it is going to be so much fun standing there, in the livery and making my first cry.“
