Sound of Town Crier echoes around Windsor
AFTER more than a century, the call of ‘Hear Ye, Hear Ye!‘ from the Town Crier has been heard in the streets of Windsor.
Newly-elected Royal Borough Town Crier, Chris Brown, performed his first cry on Saturday. His mission was to direct residents and visitors to the Windsor and Royal Borough Museum for the Victorian Christmas spectacular.
Mr Brown, who volunteers at the museum in The Guildhall, High Street, said: “I really enjoyed myself. I had
great fun and can’t wait to get out there again.
“To do my first cry at an event I’m involved with is great.“
Mr Brown had the original bell of the Maidenhead Town Crier – which is more than 130 years old and was donated by Sally Radford, of Cox Green, a descendant of a former town mayor.
The town last had a Town Crier in 1922 and Windsor in 1892.
Alice Le Page, education officer, said: “We were so pleased that Chris could do his first cry here for us.“
Mr Brown and Royal Borough deputy mayor, councillor Andrew Jenner, officially opened The Bell pub, in King Street, Maidenhead, on Saturday evening. It was Mr Brown’s first civic engagement as Town Crier.
