The Rowing Club Appeаl

THERE appears in another column this week an appeal from the Eton Excelsior Rowing Club to the public for the sum of £1,500 for the building of a new clubhouse on the island known as Deadwater Eyot.  This island is situated just above Windsor Bridge, and a lease has been offered by the Windsor Town Council to the Club at a very low rental.  For many years local rowing men have been working under great difficulties at their present premises below the Bridge, which are inadequate and inconvenient of approach.  In order to remedy this state of things it was decided last summer that the Committee should prepare plans and estimates for the construction of a new Club House on the island site.  Provisional plans have now been got out, which will give greatly increased accommodation.  For over a century the Club, which is the oldest of the up-river rowing clubs, has organised and encouraged amateur rowing in this district, and we hope the desired amount may be raised so that the “Excelsior” may enter on a new lease of enthusiastic prosperity.
