The Eton Excelsior Open the Season
Following the successes of last season, the Eton Excelsior Rowing Club have made a very good start this year. A number of new members have enrolled and several are shaping very well.
On Saturday the annual inter-club fixture with Mortlake Rowing Club for the Captain’s Cup took place at Chiswick. After holding the cup for two years in succession, the Excelsior lost it this year by two events to one.
The results were as follows:
SENIOR FOUR. N. J. Nicholls, R. J. Cork, D. A. Bond, A. G. Blake (stroke). Won easily.
JUNIOR-SENIOR EIGHT. A. Sharratt, H. C. Gough, P. Fitzgerald, V. H. Hobbs, J. Fox, A. G. Blake, R. H. Derry, V. A. Wood (stroke). Lost by one length.
JUNIOR EIGHT. Т. G. White, J. Lawson, H. Shrimpton, T. G. Hill, A. J. Hill, G. Morgan, W. Fraser, N. Duxbury (stroke), L. T. Jones (cox). Lost by two lengths.
At the conclusion of these races a race was arranged for junior fours between Worcester R.C., Mortlake R.C. and Eton Excelsior B.C., which resulted in a win for Worcester, Mortlake and Eton dead-heating for 2nd place.
The annual four-oar race for the “Devereux” Cup is arranged for Thursday and Friday (tonight) and will be rowed over the Windsor course from Clewer Point to Eton College “Rails”. The crews are as follows:
R. Almond, A. Jones, H. Shrimpton, J. G. White (stroke).
J. Fraser, J. Lawson, A. J. Hill, N. Duxbury (stroke).
W. Fraser, P. Fletcher, G. C. Morga, J. G. Hill (stroke).
There are still a few vacancies for membership, and anyone interested should apply at once before the season is too far advanced. The first regatta is at Walton on Saturday, 21st May. The Excelsior Club will not be represented at this regatta, but have two crews in training for Reading on 11th June.
