Defeated in the Final of the Thames Cup Eights at Molesey
Molesey Regatta, held on Saturday, attracted a record entry. Although the weather was dull the day was brightened by some brilliant racing.
Competition in the Thames Cup eights was very keen and Eton Excelsior did well to reach the final. In the first heat Eton met Thames R.C., who led for three quarters of a mile, Eton going up in the last quarter to win by three quarters of a length in 5 min. 22 sec.
The semi-final brought Eton against London R.C. (who had beaten them in the semi-finals of the Thames Cup at Henley) and the Eton crew’s determination to turn the tables produced one of the best races of the day. The Eton crew made a good start and were leading after the first minute, London then began to draw up, going down the enclosure the crews were dead level and it was only in the last few strokes that Eton went ahead to win by one foot in 5 min. 17 sec. This race took rather a lot out of the Eton crew and when they had to meet Kingston R.C. forty minutes later in the final, they were never able to get on terms. Kingston led Eton from the start, at half way Eton were almost level, with 300 yards to go Kingston spurted and resisting continual spurts by Eton won by one third of a length in 5 min. 17 sec.
The Eton Excelsior R.C. are sending an eight and two fours to Staines Regatta which takes place tomorrow (Saturday). The crews are as follows:
