HENLEY REGATTA

Eton Excelsior and Eton College Undefeated on the first Two Days

Both Eton Excelsior and Eton College won all their heats at Henley on Wednesday and Thursday.

The strong wind on Wednesday made conditions unpleasant and the attendance was smaller than usual  The wind varied considerably, but the Excelsior in their first heat compared very favourably with that of the other crews in the Thames Challenge Cup.

In the fifth heat on Wednesday they defeated the Civil Service comfortably in 7 min. 32 sec. by 1¼ lengths.

Eton Excelsior rowed 41 and Civil Service 38 in the first minute, Eton taking the lead at once and being clear at the top of the island.  Eton Excelsior were a length and a half ahead at the Barrier in 2 min. 3 sec. and two lengths at Fawley in 3 min. 33 sec.  Civil Service were outpaced, but they stuck to their task well and went up after passing the Mile Post.

On Thursday they were drawn against Emmanuel College, Cambridge, whom they defeated by 2½ lengths in 7 min. 32 sec.

Eton Excelsior rowed 39 and Emannuel 38 in the first minute.  Eton were clear in 10 strokes, and two lengths ahead at the top of the Island.  Eton were three lengths ahead at the Barrier in 2 min. 5 sec. and a distance at Fawley, reached in 3 min. 34 sec.  Above Fawley Eton dropped to a strong paddle.  Emmanuel were outpaced.

This afternoon they meet Reading University.

The crew is: R. J. Derry, 10 st. 4 lb. (bow); D. S. Harrison, 10 st. 13 lb.; N. J. W. Nicholls, 11 st. 4 lb.; D. A. Bond, 12 st. 7 lb.; J. C. Fox, 13 st. 6 lb.; J. B. Frampton, 12 st. 6 lb.; R. J. Cork, 12 st. 7 lb.; A. G. Blake, 12 st. 3 lb. (stroke); B. J. Cork, 9 st. 4 lb. (cox).

Eton College first race in the Ladies’ Challenge Plate was against Bedford and they won by two lengths in 7 min. 27 sec.  Later on Wednesday they defeated St. Edward’s School easily in 7 min. 43 sec.

On Thursday they were drawn against Trinity College and won by one and a quarter lengths in 7 min. 51 sec.

Sixteen of the twenty-six crews entered for the Thames Cup rowed at Marlow last Saturday, but not one of them reached the final of the Marlow Eights, and only Thames, Kensington, and Quintin, the semi-finals.  Therefore, the outlook for this trophy remaining in this country is not a very promising one, unless Eton Excelsior – who were not at Marlow – can produce something exceptional.  The three American crews, Kent, Harvard, and Yale, look to have the beating of most of the English crews in the event, but the convincing manner in which Eton Excelsior won the Thames Cup eights at Reading encourages one to hope that they may succeed next Saturday.
