Sculling and Swimming
What Local Clubs are doing
In spite of the war, Eton Excelsior Rowing Club and Windsor Ladies’ and Windsor Swimming Clubs are keeping their flags flying. Activities, of course, are on a reduced scale; so many members are on active service. Here is briefly what they are doing.
Eton Excelsior R.C.
With every member of “calling up” age in the Royal Navy, Army or Air Force, it is left to the old stagers to keep the club going. They are doing it well, notwithstanding much of their leisure after business hours is partly taken up with voluntary L.D.V., Special Constabulary and A.R.P. duties. What spare hours they have are devoted to coaching pupils of Windsor County Boys’ School and those of Latymer School evacuated from their home quarters to Stoke Poges. Among those assisting in the very good work of keeping the boys fit and training them for better days are the captain of the club (Mr. V. H. Hobbs), the Vice-Captain (Mr. V. A. C. Wood), the Hon. Secretary (Mr. Cyril Dyson) and the Hon. Treasurer (Mr. A. Bellringer). What the club sadly needs is junior members of pre-military age whom they can “nurse” and get into good shape for river work and regatta fixtures when the business of war is over.
