Rescue Dives from Boat
ROWING MEN’S VAIN EFFORTS
Herbert Simmons, a native of Yorton, near Shrewsbury, employed as gardener by Viscount Hambleden at Greenlands, near Hambleden-on-Thames, was drowned last night when bathing in the Thames.
He dived in with a partially-inflated bicycle inner tube across his shoulders. Apparently it was not sufficiently buoyant to support him. He called for help and immediately disappeared.
The Eton Excelsior crew, who are entered for the Thames Challenge Cup at Henley Regatta this week, were passing at the time, and Messrs. A. V. Schiach and J. B. Frampton, Nos. 3 and 7 in the boat, dived over in a vain attempt to rescue the young man.
Their efforts were hampered by the thick weeds, and after several dives they resumed their places in the boat and paddled back to Henley.
