Queen unveils plaque in memory of heroes
HEROES who served their country over a century and a half were honoured yesterday (Thursday) when the Queen unveiled a plaque in their memory at Eton College.
The Queen visited the school to mark the 150th anniversary of the Eton Combined Cadet Force.
After she and the Duke of Edinburgh had been greeted with a 21-gun salute, the Queen inspected 24 members of the force in front of 1,300 boys in the School Yard before unveiling the plaque in the cloisters.
Before she did so, the college’s Provost, Baron Waldegrave (formerly Government minister William Waldegrave) told watching boys and parents and guests: “This plaque represents the pinnacle of the concept that guides this school, the concept of service. Some of the names here will belong to the families of people here today, including me.”
Poignantly, the most recent name on the plaque was that of Lieutenant Colonel ‘H’ Jones, who died at Goose Green during the Falklands War leading his battalion from the front. He is the only ex-pupil since the Second World War to have his name on the plaque.
