Maidenhead Amateur Regatta
Splendid Successes of the Eton Excelsior RC
Fine weather and close finishes were the features of Maidenhead Amateur Regatta, which was held on Saturday. The weather was the best there has been for a regatta this season, and the attendance was large. Good entries were received for all the events, and the programme included 57 heats and finals. There was some very close racing, no fewer than 26 races being won by margins of under one length, the closest finish being the final of the Junior Eights, in which Eton Excelsior beat London by 1ft. The Excelsior were making their first appearance in the Junior Eights class, and they beat Maidenhead, Vesta, and the National Provincial Bank all fairly easily before disposing of London. As four of their eight also rowed in and won the Junior Fours, they certainly had a good afternoon. The results of the final heats were:-
LADIES’ PUNTING HANDICAP. Miss I. Pardoe, 1; Miss Sutherland, 2. Miss Sutherland led until half-way “home,” when Miss Pardoe passed her, to win by half a length in 2min. 46sec.
MAIDENHEAD PUNTING HANDICAP. H. R. Higginson, 1; J. A. Urquhart, 2. The ex-champion led throughout and won by a third of a length in 4min. 58sec.
MIXED DOUBLE PUNTING HANDICAP. Miss Sutherland and J. Maffett, 1; Mrs. Pedder and H. R. Higginson, 2. Miss Sutherland and Maffett made good use of their start, and won easily in 4min. 51sec.
MAIDENHEAD LADIES’ PUNTING CUP. Miss I. Pardoe, 1; Miss P. Sutherland, 2. Miss Pardoe led all the way and won by one length in 2min. 42sec.
JUNIOR SCULLS. J. G. Potter, 1; W. Christie-Rae, 2. A splendid race throughout, Potter winning by 3ft. in 4min. 44sec.
JUNIOR-SENIOR SCULLS. W. D. Baddeley, 1; L. Poulter, 2. Baddeley led slightly throughout and won by half a length in 4min. 41sec.
JUNIOR FOURS. Eton Excelsior R.C. (E. T. Watson (bow), F. A. Gurney, J. B. Frampton, K. L. Huy (stroke), H. J. W. Nicholls (cox)), 1; Auriol R.C. (T. J. Meredith (bow), G. W. Webber, M. J. Lea, G. W. Baker (stroke), L. W. Weaver (cox)), 2. Eton went right away from the start and won very easily in 4min. 46sec.
JUNIOR-SENIOR FOURS. Anglian B.C. (J. E. Smith (bow and steers), E. R. Walker, R. F. Rogers, J. March (stroke)), 1; National Provincial Bank R.C. (A. Stevens (bow and steer), E. H. Stanley, H: Preston, G. A. Staines (stroke), 2. Anglian, rowing a faster stroke, led throughout and won by two and a half lengths in 4min. 6sec.
SENIOR FOURS. Vesta R.C. (J. D. Willcox (bow and steers), J. L. Wilson, V. P. S. Sabin, O. St. J. Hamlin (stroke)), 1; Imperial College B.C. (A. G. Thoday (bow and steers), J. E. Mott, C. A. Bristow, A. F. S. Gouldsmith (stroke)), 2. Vesta were clear at the half-distance and they drew away to win by two and a half lengths in 4min. 6sec.

A magnificent race. Eton took a slight lead at the start and led by a quarter of a length at the half-distance. London drew level, and there was a great race to the finish, Eton Excelsior winning by one foot in 3min. 46sec.

Reading went away from. the start and were clear at the half-distance. Rowing with much power, they left Vesta behind and won easily in 3min. 35sec. the fastest time of the day.

Thames went away at the start and were three-quarters of a length ahead at the half-distance, eventually winning by one and three-quarter lengths in 3min. 44sec.
