Picture book matches good old days with modern Windsor.
Windsor Through Time boasts 180 pictures of the town – contrasting its past with its present.
It is the fruit of months of research carried out by Malcolm Lock, chairman of the Friends of Windsor and the Windsor and Royal Borough Museum, his wife Gloria, former Friends chairman Norman Oxley, and Beryl Hedges, who is a veteran of the Friends and Windsor Local History Group.
Malcolm said: “Our job was to sift through all the pictures stored at the Tinkers Lane and try and match ‘old’ pictures of Windsor with ‘new‘.
“We found a picture of an old horse-drawn dust-cart which paired nicely with a picture of the modern collection vehicles. We found a picture of a 1955 double decker bus with a single decker next to it in the town, and I hung around until I got a shot of two modern buses in exactly the same spot.
“We also matched a picture of the old prefabs in Foster Avenue with the new houses at Osgood Park.“
Malcolm a physics teacher, first lived in Windsor in 1969, but has taught in York and abroad before finally settling in the town again in 2005.
You can find the book at the Windsor and Royal Borough Museum at the Guildhall, and at Waterstones in Peascod Street, where it was formally launched on Thursday in the presence of the Mayor of Windsor and Maidenhead, Cllr Andrew Jenner.
