Eton Excelsior R.C.’s Successes
7th August 1931 in the Windsor & Eton Express
THE Eton Excelsior Rowing Club finished the up-river regatta season by gaining another victory at Henley Town on Monday. This was the eighth trophy secured by the Club this summer. The Club is one of the oldest rowing clubs on the Thames – it was established in 1851 and this year has been one of the most successful in its long history. The Club has been represented at most of the up-river regattas this summer, and its crews won the Junior and Maiden Fours at Reading, the Junior-Senior and Junior Fours at Bourne End, the Junior Fours at Staines, the Junior Eights and Junior Fours at Maidenhead, and the Junior Fours at Henley Town. At Maidenhead the Junior Eight did exceedingly well, beating Maidenhead, Vesta and the National Provincial Bank in the heats, and the London Rowing Club by a foot, after a most exciting race, in the final. This was a splendid performance as four of the victorious crew were rowing in the Junior Four the same afternoon, winning that event too. We understand that the Club still requires about £1,000 before they can go forward with their scheme for building a new boathouse on Deadwater Eyot. Now they have “done something” the Club deserves every support, and we hope that the subscriptions will show substantial additions in the next few weeks. After such a splendid season, the Club certainly deserves better accommodation than their present premises below Windsor Bridge. Much of their success has been due to the energy and enthusiasm of the Captain, Mr. Cyril Dyson, who deserves hearty congratulations on the Club’s notable successes. The victorious crews must also be cordially complimented.
