ERC – Congratulations
CONGRATULATIONS to the members and officials of the Eton Excelsior Rowing Club on last Saturday’s successful annual regatta. The entries, more particularly in the open events, the Maiden and Junior Fours, were above the average, which is a good omen for the future. During the past season the club has enjoyed a bigger measure of success at open regattas than for some years past, and there is every indication that there is at hand the material to build up crews more than capable of holding their own against the strongest up-river clubs. If the members follow the good advice of Mr. Bert Haines, who last week emphasised that “rowing is no tea party,” they will train hard, put their backs into their work and go forward and win fresh laurels. Five trophies have been won during the present season, opening with welcome successes at Bourne End Regatta. It was there the Club won the Grand Challenge Fours and the Maiden Fours, while G. W. Bayley carried off the Junior-Senior Sculls. Further victories were gained at Cookham Regatta, the Club pulling off the Junior-Senior Fours and G. W. Bayley won the Junior-Senior Sculls event, defeating Bolton, of the Maidenhead R.C., in a splendid final. At a time when the Eton Excelsior R.C. are hoping to realise the ambition of erecting modern boathouse premises at the Island known as Dead Water Ait, this season’s successes should stimulate friends and supporters, and local rowing enthusiasts, to subscribe generously to the fund. A sum of £1,500 is required and about £500 has been subscribed. Further support will stimulate even keener interest in the oldest established Rowing Club on the Upper Thames, with the best of traditions and the prospects of a bright future.
