Death of the President and “A Record Year” and Increased Active Memberships

Alderman George Mitchell, J.P., the president, took the chair at the 21st annual meeting of the Eton Excelsior Rowing Club at the Royal Albert Institute, and he was supported by Mr C. D. Dyson, captain, Mr V. H. Hobbs, vice-captain, Mr V. A. Wood, hon. Treasurer, Mr A. Bellringer, assistant hon secretary, Messrs. A. H. Dyson and M. Lightfoot, hon. auditors, and a large number of members. Mr L. Barrett, hon. secretary, was unable to be present through illness.

Secretary’s Report

Mr Wood gave the annual report, in which was included mention of the loss the club had sustained in the death of their president for nine years, Sir Geo. Peters. They also had to record the death of the vice-president, Mr R. E. Hannis, who was a prominent rowing man and athlete about forty years ago.

On the death of Sir George Peters, Alderman Mitchell had kindly accepted the office of president.

The number of active members showed a welcome increase, and the club was represented at several regattas. To those who helped with the coaching, particularly Mr A. W. P. Harrison, Mr L. W. S. Howard, Mr L. F. Blane, Mr W. Blane, Mr G. J. Mower White and Mr Sprigg, the thanks of the club were due.

The annual regatta was held at the Club on August 22nd when Lady Mary Crichton, accompanied by Col. the Hon. Sir George Crichton, kindly presented the prizes. The Windsor v. Eton race was won by Windsor, and Mr. A. H. Dyson once more very kindly entertained the crews to supper, when he presented the “Peters” cup to the winners.

The annual supper took place on Feb. 18th, and though the fund in aid of new premises had not progressed as quickly as expected, considerable help had been received from a children’s entertainment produced at the Windsor Theatre and the Slough Public Hall by Mrs. C. D. Dyson.

Finally, the members wished to thank all those who had taken an interest in the club, for the past year.

The balance sheet showed a deficit of £11 10s 6d, but Mr Wood explained that, considering all the circumstances, the financial state of the club was really ex- …

Election of Officers

The officers were elected as follows: President, Alderman G. Mitchell; vice-presidents, re-elected en bloc with the following additions, Councillor F. L. Ellen, the Mayor, Mr W. Blane, and Mr K. C. Baxter. Captain, Mr Cyril Dyson, vice- captain, Mr V. H. Hobbs; hon. treasurer, Mr V. H. Wood; hon secretary, Mr L. Barrett; assistant hon. secretary, Mr Bellringer; committee, Messrs. Powell, Buck, Bayley, Baker, Bedford, Sharratt, White and Bond.

Messrs. A. H. Dyson and M. Lightfoot were re-elected hon. auditors

Mr Cyril Dyson, in a brief speech, said the past season had been a record one, and he referred to the club’s successes, particularly the victory of the eight at Maidenhead Regatta.

He thanked all the old members who stuck to the club, and paid, their subscriptions, but hardly ever came down. Without their help, the club would not be in such an excellent position.

He thanked them very much for his re-election and promised to do his best for the club at all times.

Election of Other Officers

On the proposition of Mr Cyril DYSON, seconded by Mr WHITE, Mr V. H. Hobbs was unanimously re-elected vice-captain, and he suitably returned thanks.

Mr V. A. Wood was unanimously elected hon. treasurer on the proposition of Mr BELLRINGER, seconded by Mr BAYLEY.

Mr WOOD returned thanks, and then proposed Mr L. Barrett as hon. secretary. They were sorry he was indisposed and trusted he would soon be well again. Mr BUCK seconded, and the proposition was heartedly carried.

Mr BAKER proposed Mr Bellringer as assistant secretary,a nd particularly referred to his successful efforts in connection with the social side of the Club. He was mainly responsible for the £30 referred to in the balance sheet.

Mr A. H. DYSON seconded, and the proposition was unanimously carried.

Mr BELLRINGER, in returning thanks, referred particularly to the work of Mr. Bedford in connection with the electric fittings at the Boxing Day dance.

The Committee

The Committee was balloted for, and the following were elected for the ensuing year:- Messrs. Powell, Buck, Bayley, Baker, Bedford, Sharratt, White and Bond. Messrs. J. Tull and Long acted as scrutineers.

On the proposition of Mr BUCK, seconded by Mr HARRISON, Messrs. A. H. Dyson and M. Lightfoot were re-elected hon. auditors and thanked for their services.

Votes of Thanks

On the proposition of Mr A. H. DYSON, a vote of thanks was accorded the Press and Mr LIGHTFOOT returned thanks.

The Chairman was cordially thanked by Mr HARRISON for his able conduct of the meeting, and Mr MITCHELL suitably returned thanks.

Mr Cyril DYSON mentioned during the meeting that he had received a letter from Huy, their successful stroke last year. […] was now in France, and had joined a […] rowing club.
