Past captured on film
I RECENTLY received a DVD produced by the Friends of Windsor Parish Church entitled Windsor Parish and All Saints: Church Life in the 1960s and 70s.
These were produced from the cine archive of Tom Smith, who is now 94 years old. This is an excellent example of where cine films have been converted to DVD and can be used historically to give an insight into what Windsor was like almost 50 years ago.
Tom purchased a cine camera in about 1960 and created a unique archive of many reels of film of both family and community activities in Windsor.
It soon became apparent that there was much material of interest to Windsorians and historians alike.
This has a companion DVD entitled Windsor Cubbing and Scouting in the 1960s and 70s and a third DVD is planned of the activities of the Windsor Allotments and Home Gardens Society.
Windsor Parish and All Saints: Church Life in the 1960s and 70s includes clips of 14 different church events, all of which took place during Reverend Leslie Badham’s time as vicar from 1958 to 1973. The events include two garden parties for the ‘not-so-young’, a flower festival at the Parish Church and an outing to Windsor Great Park.
There is also a sequence showing a sponsored walk in April 1970 in aid of the restoration of the Parish Church. This shows about 150 people walking along the Long Walk to the Copper Horse and a circular 15 mile route back to the Parish Hall in Grove Road.
A meeting of the Parish Youth Club at the Parish Hall is included, featuring teenagers playing table tennis, snooker and cards, along with curate David Price and Tom’s first wife, the late Dorothy Smith who, with Tom, ran the club.
In another sequence, the Queen Mother visits the newly restored Parish Church Garden to plant a tree on May 9, 1972. There is also a visit to the Savill Gardens and a party held in the garden of the old vicarage in Park Street.
The DVD is for sale and proceeds go to the Parish Church’s stained glass restoration and preservation project.
