Sir William Carter is not the only Windsor Mayor to be buried in Windsor Cemetery – it is the resting place of many others, including Mrs Florence Margaret Carteret Carey, the town’s first woman mayor. Her life story is told in Windlesora 26, in an article by Pamela Marson, but this article introduces new material, namely the date she was buried, the plot and with whom she was buried, the inscription on the headstone, and a photograph of same.

Mrs Carteret Carey served two mayoral terms, 1937 – 38 and 1938 – 39, and she was also Deputy Mayor 1939 – 1940. She died on 3 September 1949, and four days later she was buried with her husband, who had died in 1932, in plot CN 338 in Windsor Cemetery. The headstone is a traditional cross, with sword affixed, mounted on a base containing the following wording:

IN EVER LOVING MEMORY OF

MAJOR GENERAL CARTERET CAREY

THE HIGHLAND LIGHT INFANTRY

AND GOVERNOR OF THE MILITARY

KNIGHTS OF WINDSOR

FROM 1913 to 1932

AND OF HIS WIFE

FLORENCE MARGARET

DIED SEPTEMBER 3RD 1949
