Standing on St Leonards Road since around 1790s, Windsor’s Great Cedar once formed part of the grounds of Clewer House School. Over its long life it has repeatedly faced the axe, prompting public campaigns to save it in 1898, 1903, 1955 and again in 2011. Support has ranged from residents, an MP and the Mayor of Windsor to, remarkably, letters arriving from America!
More than two centuries after it was planted, the cedar remains one of Windsor’s most distinctive landmarks — and even made an appearance in the 1963 film “Carry On Cabby”. Cedar trees can live for as long as 800 years, so perhaps this particular Windsor survivor still has a few chapters left to write.
