Ricky Tick

🎸 If you walk down Peascod Street today, you’d never guess what happened on this corner…

The pedestrianised junction with the narrow entrance to Goswell Hill and Goswell Alley was once home to the famous Star and Garter pub. It was here, in an upstairs room, that John Mansfield launched the very first Ricky Tick Club in 1962 – a venue that would become legendary in British rhythm and blues.

On 14 December 1962, an almost unknown band called The Rolling Stones took to the stage for what was their first performance outside London. It was Bill Wyman’s debut with the band, and John Mansfield paid them just 10 shillings (50p) for the evening. The Stones returned again and again, playing Ricky Tick nearly 40 times between 1962 and 1964, before becoming one of the biggest bands in the world.

It’s an extraordinary piece of Windsor’s musical heritage—and surely worthy of a Blue Plaque!
