Editorial

Welcome to the long-awaited Windlesora 38. Included in this edition is an article remembering significant events and celebrations from 2022, including the Platinum Jubilee celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II. Her death on 8th September 2022, aged 96, brought to an end the longest reign of a British monarch.

There is a fascinating account of the use of an online forum to answer the question of the identity of the Lady in Blue, subject of a painting in the Windsor and Royal Borough Museum. The availability of information online, and the ability to communicate swiftly enabled a thorough investigation to be undertaken by both professional and ordinary people working in partnership.

The release of the 1921 census revealed that Agatha Christie was staying at Clewer Mill House on census night. Newly established as a writer, we learn what led to Agatha to use Clewer Mill as inspiration for a murder location in one of her novels (although its true location was disguised).

There is a trio of animal stories – Queen Victoria’s hippopotamus, a dog from the Russian Royal family who lived his final days in Windsor, and the bizarre end to a one-time Windsor curate involving a lion in Skegness.

There are articles about Bletchley Park, rioting in Windsor, and the history of the Princess Margaret Rose School.

Interspersed are personal stories and reminiscences, snippets from newspapers and a report of more recent activities of the history group.

Sadly there is also the last article submitted by Elias Kupfermann, who tragically died in December 2022.

Do you have a story about the local area? Could you write an article? Or would you like to provide material for a collaboration? If so, we would love to hear from you. Meanwhile, please enjoy reading about Windsor’s local history.
