Wartime Egg-less Fruit Cake

  • 8 ozs flour
  • 3 ozs fat (margarine, lard, or dripping)
  • 3 ozs sugar
  • half a grated nutmeg
  • 6 ozs fruit
  • half a pint of milk
  • 1 teaspoonful Bicarbonate of Soda

Rub the fat into the flour and add the dry ingredients. Dissolve the bicarbonate in a little of the milk and add to the mixture with the rest of the milk. Leave standing all night, then bake one and a half hours in a moderate oven. This makes a nice cake which keeps moist.
