The 2014 Views of the Past articles explore Windsor and the surrounding area through buildings, photographs, artists and local personalities. Subjects range from Burnham Abbey and All Saints’ Church in Dedworth to the Isaacs store in Peascod Street and the remarkable story of Windsor-born merchant Robert Keayne. Together they reveal how familiar places, surviving buildings and individual lives can open windows onto the area’s past.
Photography and art feature particularly strongly, with articles examining early photography in Windsor, Victorian photographer George Henton and the work of Thomas Sandby, alongside the launch of Images of a Bygone Age. The year’s articles also reach into wartime and social history, including a special Christmas in 1915, creating a varied snapshot of the people, places and images that have preserved local memory.
