In this section, you will be able to find useful information about this website and about others. We hope that this makes it easier in your journey of finding relevant information. If you think something is missing, then please do not hesitate to get in contact with us, and we will have a look at it.
Search the Website
On every page at the right-hand side, there is a spyglass 🔎 which allows you to Search the Website. We also include it here just in case you missed it. This is an inbuilt tool from WordPress and will look for words or phrases and display the results. Extremely useful when there are so many articles.
Windlesora
Windlesora is our annual journal of the WLHG. Articles cover a wide range of topics related to Windsor, Old Windsor, and Eton. Each Windlesora contains any number of fascinating articles about the town, its businesses, its people, and more. The cumulative content of over 500 articles, represents a valuable source of information.
Research Materials
The Group possesses an extensive array of printed materials such as local newspapers, maps, photos, postcards, audio/visual materials, and traditional books. We are also looking to build a digitized archive for future generations. If you are interested in either receiving or providing information or materials, please get in Contact with us.
We also have a collection of Press Clippings from over the years. These include a regular column by Elias Kupfermann, which provide excellent nuggets of local history. Other clippings include notable people, buildings, and events, as well as some about ourselves. We thank The Express, the Maidenhead Advertiser, and the Windsor and Eton Express for permission to reproduce them.
We are digitising our scrapbooks that we have been maintaining since the Group was formed in 1976. The first of these, Ellen’s Purple Scrapbook, is now available online, covering 1982 to 2004.
We also have an Archive of the Windsor & Eton Express from 1814 to 2020. We are trying to repatriate the 1812 – 1814 volume that we had restored to have the complete journey from when Charles Knight started publishing it. This is an invaluable source of local knowledge. Only up to 1917 has been digitised and made available online. The Express and Maidenhead Advertiser has from the eighties onward available online for a fee.
Page Index
The Page Index is an alphabetic list of all the pages within this website. By clicking on the item, you will be taken to that page. This is automatically generated by WordPress so will always be up-to-date.
Useful Links
We have put together a page with Useful Links. This has two parts: firstly, websites that have local information about Windsor and the surrounding area; secondly about local Groups and Societies that have put together some fantastic websites and provide great points of contact for your studies.
Calendar of Events
Please have a look at our Calendar of Events for the forthcoming months. It has our meetings, the annual open day, and any fairs that we will be attending such as the Eton Action Fair. We also include events from other Societies such as the U3A, that we think will be of interest.
Donate
The WLHG relies on raising the majority of our funds through having stalls at fairs. Our publications, especially new books, take a substantial chunk of those funds to initially publish. Hopefully, they are successful and cover all our costs. Sometimes it takes a while to achieve that. Often, we receive a Donation to help push things over the finishing line. Help is always welcome!
