Well Rowed Excelsior
All sportsmen will join us in congratulating the Eton Excelsior on their many regatta successes this season up and down the river. Last week they sent an eight to Staines and won the Thames Eights Cup. The oldest rowing Club on the river are certainly coming into their own this summer, and the cry “well rowed, Excelsior” is now to be heard at every Thames regatta.
High Praise
Commenting on the Excelsiors’ win at Staines in Monday’s issue of The Times, their rowing correspondent writes: “Regatta records would have to be searched back for a considerable number of years to find the last occasion on which Eton Excelsior Rowing Club won a Thames Cup eights race. Their victory in this class last Saturday was a splendid performance and a fitting reward for much hard work, which members of the crew have put in for many months. Eton Excelsior, who have been coached by H. O. C. Boret, the old Cambridge Blue, won the Junior-Senior Eights at Kingston and Molesey Regattas, and so they won the higher Thames Cup class at their first attempt. It was a victory for “length” and should be a lesson to other clubs, who merely ‘scratch’ the water, instead of rowing an effective stroke.
Mistaken Identity
Several attempts have been made in the past to change the name of the Eton Excelsior to Windsor and Eton R.C., or Windsor and Eton Excelsior, but they have all failed, because tradition is hard to break and the majority of the members felt the old name, which has been known up and down the river for so many years, should not be altered. All this is easy to understand, but there is no doubt the majority of Regatta spectators think the club is connected with Eton College and after all it is only a natural thought, for there is Eton Vikings, composed exclusively of Old Etonians, so why not Eton Excelsior. An onlooker at Staines was heard to remark when the Excelsior won on Saturday, “Oh well, they are all old Oxford and Cambridge men; they ought to be able to win any cup they like”.
