The Devereux Cup 1928

Date 1928
Reference EE01-0016

Transcript

This race, for junior members of the Eton Excelsior R.C., was rowed last week, when very promising form was shown, and if this is maintained the Club should have no difficulty in finding winning crews for the junior events at the open regattas this year.  Details:-

HEAT 1.  Berks Station: N. Haines, W. A. Street, E. C. N. Gower, J. G. White (stroke) V. A. Wood (cox), 1; Bucks Station: F. Turner, L. W. Lucking, W. Bedford, C. Matthews (stroke), L. Barrett (cox), 2.  Won by three lengths.

FINAL. Berks: J. G. White’s crew, 1; Bucks: H. Rhymes, R. H. Dyke, G. H. Street, R. Stickland (stroke), L. Barrett (cox), 2.

The final proved to be the finest race so far this season, the crews racing neck and neck all the way, and it was not until Jacobs’ Island was reached that the Berks crew went ahead, and although Bucks spurted well towards the end they were finally beaten by a length.

This Cup and also the “King” Cup were presented at the Club dance on Empire Day, the presentation being made by Mrs. Thomson, the Captain’s mother, who shows a very great interest in all the Club’s affairs.
