Eton Excelsior Club’s Success at Kingston
The Eton Excelsior Rowing Club gained their third success of the season at Kingston Regatta on Saturday. The Dittons Challenge Cup for Junior-Senior Eights was won by defeating Midland Bank Rowing Club in the final.
The conditions were very rough, as there was a strong following wind which met the stream throughout the day, making the water very choppy; thus the watermanship of the crews was given the highest possible test. Eton Excelsior had the same station in each heat, namely, the Middlesex station, and were staggered down three-quarters of a length each time owing to there being a bend in the course which gave the crews on this station a slight advantage.
Cygnet R.C. were disposed of in the first heat in the time of 4.3 min. In the semi-final, Ibis R.C. were the opponents. Ibis had drawn a bye until this heat. Before the bend was reached, Eton had nearly regained the three-quarters length and, on rounding the bend, went away to win by one length in 4.2 min.
The final was rowed against Midland Bank R.C. Eton got away to a good start considering the conditions and before the bend was reached had regained the three-quarters length after rowing only thirty-three strokes in the second minute, and then putting the rate up drew ahead to win by three-quarters length in the time of 3.58 min.
The Eight was very well stroked by A. G. Blake, who was backed up well by the rest of the crew. The cox (P. J. Cork) steered well over a very difficult course and under difficult conditions. At the conclusion of the Regatta, Mrs. Bruce, wife of the Commissioner for Australia, presented the prizes.
The crew was as follows: E. T. Watson (bow), H. C. Gough, N. J. W. Nicholls, D. A. Bond, D. S. Harrison, P. Watson, R. J. Cork, A. G. Blake (stroke) and B. J. Cork (cox).
The Club are sending the same crew to Molesey Regatta tomorrow.
