Queen gives windows her seal of approval

Four royal residences, including Windsor Castle, feature in a pair of stained-glass windows officially unveiled by the Queen on Friday.

Her Majesty visited the Guildhall to unveil four stained-glass artworks in her honour

Her Majesty visited the Guildhall in Windsor High Street to see the windows, which were commissioned by the Royal Albert Institute Trust.

They feature roundels of hand-painted glass showing Buckingham Palace, Sandringham, Balmoral and the castle.

Wearing a blue cashmere coat and dress with a matching hat by Angela Kelly, the Queen, who was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, was met by dignitaries including the Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire, Mary Bayliss.

During his speech at the dedication service, John Handcock, clerk to the trustees at the Trust, said: “The design itself came from the principle that there is no place like home, so we went with the four royal homes.

“We of course hope Windsor is your favourite.”

The Queen also wore a brooch given to Queen Victoria by Prince Albert on the day of their wedding in 1840, which shows the symbol of the Royal Albert Institute Trust, which is also part of the window design.

The windows were created to help celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

They were designed by Staines-based Artemis Glass and installed in October last year.

Also in attendance was the Mayor of Windsor and Maidenhead, Cllr Andrew Jenner.

He said: “I’m sure we would all agree the windows make a fabulous addition to the historic Guildhall building and I’m sure they will be enjoyed and admired for many years to come.”

Movember mayor apologises for scruffy look

THE Royal Borough mayor was sporting a bandit-style handlebar moustache when he met the Queen.

Cllr Andrew Jenner took part in Movember, where men grow facial hair throughout November to raise awareness about male cancer and money to combat it.

When the Queen visited Windsor Guildhall on Friday, he felt the need to explain himself, apologising to Her Majesty for being scruffy before explaining the purpose of the moustache.

Cllr Jenner’s son Aaron and Royal Borough officer Andrew Scott joined in with the Movember effort.

The Mayor has so far raised £500.
