Eton Excelsior’s Success
BEAT QUINTIN IN FINAL AT MAIDENHEAD
By G. C. DRINKWATER
FOR the first time since Henley, the weather held at Maidenhead Regatta on Saturday. This regatta virtually marks the end of what is known as the Best Boat regatta season.
Some very good racing was seen in The Daily Telegraph Challenge Cup, the chief event of the day, which is given for eights of the Thames Cup class, and drew nine entries. For this event Bryanston School sent their Ladies’ Plate crew, but although they beat Durham Argonauts with ease, they were not quite good enough for the Quintin B.C. crew, who beat them by one length in the semi-final.
In the final Quintin met Eton Excelsior, who had disposed of Thames, Marlow, Vesta and Kensington, directly or indirectly. Quintin went off on Bucks at the higher rate, and the crews rowed level with occasionally a slight advantage to Quintin to past the half-way mark. Then Quintin gained an appreciable lead.
WELL-TIMED SPURT
Eton had held themselves in until the slight bend favouring Berks came into their favour at the bottom of the enclosures. Blake, their stroke, then made a well-timed spurt and went past Quintin to win by a quarter of a length.
Bryanston made up for their failure here by winning the Junior Eights from eight other entries. In the semi-final they beat Anglian by no more than 3 feet, and it looked as if their final would be just as close, for they rowed practically level with Kensington to the enclosures.
Then a splendid spurt took them away, and in spite of the fact that their No. 6 came off his slide 200 yards from the finish, they managed to win by three quarters of a length.
Henley R.C. scored another victory in the Junior Senior Eights, but the local club won only one race, the Pairs, for which only two entries were received.
In the Sculls, Habbitts won the Junior Senior (there is no senior event), and Wakefield, who has good length of swing but might be quicker into the water, won his Junior with great ease. Final results:
