The Annual Report

At the annual meeting of the members of the Eton Excelsior Rowing Club, held last week at the Club’s headquarters, the “Bridge House” Hotel, Eton, the chief subject discussed was the urgent need of a new racing eight.  A number of financial promises was made, and it is hoped to start a fund at once for a boat.  Mr. A. H. Dyson, the oldest member of the club, occupied the chair at the commencement of the evening, and after he had been re-elected Captain, Mr. A. Н. Baker filled the position.  Among those also present were: Messrs. V. H. Hobbs (vice-captain), T. J. Cartland (hon. treasurer), J. W. Tull (hon. secretary), T. Luff (assistant secretary), M. Lightfoot (hon. auditor), H. Luff, A. G. Horlock, G. W. Bayley, H. Powers, C. D. Dyson, J. W. Croft, L. Brown, S. Little, J. Frost, A. Bellringer, M. R. Burgoyne, Lieut.-Colonel J. T. Halligan, D. S. Andrews, etc.Mr. TULL read the annual report, as follows:-

The Committee have much pleasure in presenting the 75th annual report.

Membership:  The membership of the Club last season was 57.

Open Regattas:  The Club was represented at most of the open regattas last season.  Our Maiden Four won the “Jacob” Challenge Cup, and G. W. Bayley won the Junior Sculls at Maidenhead Regatta.  The following members represented the Club at the open regattas during the last season: G. W. Bayley, C. L. Andrews, D. S. Andrews, W. Brown, J. W. Croft, C. D. Dyson, V. H. Hobbs, H. Kendall. D. B. King, H. Luff, A. J. Merson, R. C. Mills, G. Newton, H. J. Matthews, L. B. Palmer, V. J. Pottow, H. E. F. Saunders, R. F. C. Wheeler, and J. G. White.

Club Races:  A number of Club races were decided during the including the “Devereux Cup,” which was won by (L. W. S. Howard, L.B. Palmer, A. J. Merson, C. L. Andrews); the “William Robert King” Cup, won by (V. H. Hobbs, H. J. Matthews, D. S. Andrews, L. B. Palmer, A. Bellringer (cox.)); the “Herbert” Cup by G. Newton and A. Bellringer, dead-heat.

The annual Eight-Oar Race for the cup given by Sir George Peters between crews representing Windsor and Eton was this year held on a Saturday afternoon, instead of, as in previous years, on one evening during the week before the annual Club Regatta.  As it proved such a success, it has been decided to always hold this race in the afternoon in the future.  Sir George started the race from a launch kindly lent by Mr. Arthur Jacobs for the occasion.  The Windsor crew eventually won a very hard race by the narrow margin of 3 ft., thus reversing last year’s result.

The annual Regatta was held on August 22nd, and despite the bad weather some very good racing was seen, at the conclusion of which Lady Peters kindly presented the prizes.

The annual supper was held on January 28th, at the Club Headquarters, the “Bridge House” Hotel, Eton, and owing to the sudden indisposition of our President, the Mayor of Windsor (Sir William Carter) kindly took the chair.

The members wish to thank all those who subscribed to the Club funds, the donors of prizes and subscribers to the club regatta during the past season, to the Eton College Authorities for the use of their premises for our Regatta and other events; to Mr. H. H. S. Hartley and Captain Thompson for their valuable coaching of crews; to Mr. R. Calvert for allowing our boat to be moored in front of his premises; to all those gentlemen who acted as officials at the Regatta, and to Lieut.-Colonel Halligan for placing rooms at our disposal for meetings, etc

In conclusion, the Committee will be very pleased to welcome any new members to the Club during the coming season.

The CHAIRMAN (Mr. A. H. Dyson) said it was an excellent report, and there was only one thing missed out, namely, a reference to the admirable work done by Mr. J. W. Tull as Hon. Secretary, especially in connection with the social side of the Club.  No less a sum than £21 had been handed over to the Club funds as the result of entertainments, dances, etc. (applause).  He had much pleasure in proposing the adoption of the report. Mr. Hobbs seconded, and the proposition was carried.

The Balance Sheet

Mr. CARTLAND submitted the balance sheet, which contained the following items:-

Receipts: Balance from Current Account, £6 2s. 5d.; balance from Deposit Account, £50 – £56 2s. 5d.; members’ annual subscriptions, £112 7s.: Hon. Members, £17 1s.; proceeds of Club Regatta, £5 7s. 7d.: from Social Committee, £21; fire insurance claim, £18; cartage of members’ private boats, £4 11s.; storage of ditto, 10s.; entry fees – monthly races, £1 2s.; interest on deposit at Bank, £1 1s. 11d.; sale of old boats, £3 13s. total, £240 15s. 11d.

Payments: Rent of club premises, £15; Deposit Account, £60; rates and taxes, £6 8s. 7d.; insurance, £3 16s. 3d.; repairs to premises, £2 7s. 6d.; repairs to boats, £6 4s. 6d.; housing racing boats and care of raft, £4; cartage of boats, etc., £15 11s. 6d.; boatsman’s wages and extra work, £31 8s.; regatta entrance fees, £19 16s.; Thames Conservancy, £7 12s.; club prizes, etc., £5 11s.; printing and stationery, £5 15s. 2d.; laundry, £1 17s. 11d.; varnish, paint, soap, etc., £7 12s. 1d;  purchase of second-hand boat, £6; purchase of towels, £2 7s. 3d.: subscriptions to Rowing Association, £1 6s.: wreath, 15s.; cheque book, 5s. Hon. Secretary – postages and incidentals, £3 17s. 2d.; Hon. Treasurer – post and receipt stamps, £1 11s. – £209 1s. 11d.; balance to Current Account, £31 14s.; total, £240 15s. 11d.

The CHAIRMAN proposed, and Mr. CROFT seconded, the adoption of the balance sheet, which was carried.

Election of President

The CHAIRMAN proposed the re-election of Sir George Peters as President, and said he was the heart and soul of the club.  He always took the keenest interest in all their doings, and came to see them as often as possible (applause).

Mr. TULL seconded, and the proposition was heartily carried.

The Vice-Presidents

On the proposition of Mr. CARTLAND, seconded by Mr. HORLOCK, the whole of the Vice-Presidents were re-elected en bloc, and Captain A. Thompson’s name was added to the list.

Election of Officers

Mr. TULL, in proposing the re-election of Mr. Baker as Captain of the Club, said he was a great asset to them and they could not have a better man (hear, hear).

Mr. LITTLE seconded, and the proposition was carried with acclamation.

Mr. BAKER now took the chair, and returned thanks for his re-election.  Last season, he said, he was unable to put in so many attendances at the boathouse as he would have liked, but he hoped to do so during the coming season. to thank the Vice-Captain for the valuable help he gave him.  Rowing was a great sport, and he (Mr. Baker) hoped to carry out the duties attaching to the office of Captain of the Club with credit to himself (applause).

Mr. CROFT proposed, in suitable terms, the re-election of Mr. Hobbs as Vice-Captain.

Mr. ANDREWS seconded, and the proposition was heartily carried.

Mr. HOBBS briefly returned thanks.

On the proposition of Mr. BAKER, seconded by Мr. HOBBS, Mr. Cartland was unanimously re-elected Hon. Treasurer, both paying a well-deserved tribute to him for the admirable way in which he kept the accounts.

Mr. CARTLAND, in returning thanks, said he had received great assistance from the two Secretaries.  He went on to say that he hoped something would be done this year to get some new boats.  They wanted a new single sculler very badly.  He would also like to see a new boathouse (applause).

Mr. C. D. DYSON proposed the re-election of Mr. J. W. Tull as Hon. Secretary, and said they could not possibly have a better man (applause).

Mr. BAYLEY seconded, and the proposition was carried with acclamation.

Mr. TULL, in returning thanks, said he was sorry there was no mention of the work of the Social Committee in the report, but he was sure they were all grateful to the members of it for the work they had done.  He then went on to propose the re-election of Mr. T. Luff as Assistant Hon. Secretary, and said he had rendered him every possible help during the past year (applause).

Mr. POWERS Seconded, and the proposition was heartily carried.

Mr. LUFF suitably returned thanks.

Mr. POWERS proposed the re-election of Mr. A. H. Dyson and Mr. M. Lightfoot as Hon. Auditors, and thanked them for their services.

Mr. LUFF seconded, and the proposition was carried with unanimity.

Mr. LIGHTFOOT returned thanks, and paid a tribute to Mr. Cartland for the admirable way in which he kept the accounts, and also to Mr. Tull for his splendid work as Hon. Secretary of the Club.

The Committee

The Committee were balloted for, and the following were elected:- Messrs. G. W. Bayley, J. W. Croft, C. D. Dyson, A. G. Horlock, H. Luff, G. Newton, V. J. Pottow, and H. E. F. Saunders.  All were members of the old committee with the exception of the last-named.  Messrs. Halligan and Little acted as scrutineers.

The SECRETARY read a number of letters of apology from members who were unable to attend.

Votes of Thanks

Mr. TULL proposed, and Mr. C. D. DYSON seconded, a vote of thanks to the Press, and Mr. LIGHTFOOT returned thanks.

A hearty vote of thanks was also passed to Mr. Baker for presiding.

It was announced that the season would open as usual on Good Friday (April 2nd).
